Funcom Cuts 70% of U.S. Workforce

The report over the weekend by Ten Ton Hammer that suggested Funcom cut 70% of its U.S. workforce is apparently true.  Funcom confirmed via email that they have made "mass layoffs" in their U.S. division.

"We did have some staffing cuts at Funcom this week as well as new positions opening in the organization as part of our ongoing cost based efficiency and performance initiatives that are vital to any business,"  Funcom said in their official response to the rumors.

The jobs comprised primarily of Customer Service and Quality Assurance departments, and is likely due to the weak performance of Age of Conan.

They've actually done several rounds of lay offs. First round 40% of staff was removed in September. This most recent November culling cut loose another 30%. Of the shift I was once on (evenings) there are only 4-7 people left on staff to handle the incoming petitions and emails where there were once close to 30. Yeah Funcom is having problems..

i suffered thru funcoms mess called conan. while im sorry people are losing their jobs, the game sucked. i lasted 2 months before it became so maddening to login that i uninstalled and intentionally damaged my game disks just in case my memory of the suck faded and i was tempted to re-install.

good luck finding jobs guys and gals. i am truly sorry for you.

fyi to game devs. the time is coming when players will become smart enough to demand playable complete games instead of paying for beta while devs use the income to finish the game. this is not a viable business model and i do hope you [devs] have been taking note that we wont stand for it anymore.

Arthuis, look at the dates on the articles.  The hiring notice was from May.  I guess curse doesn't really keep a finger on the pulse of gaming news.  ;)

Anyone else find it funny that over on the right side, under latest news, the next story is that Funcom is hiring?
